MEME - It's my turn

Recently, I was tagged by Jeff Belonger in his 2nd Meme post - The MEME's are back.... My MEME part 2.....  It's been a couple of days now and after much poking a prodding by Jeff I've finally sat down to write this!  So here goes...5 things you probably don't know about me:

1 - Can you guess my nationality?  I'm sure the first guess is Indian, which is partly correct.  The part that doesn't show through is that I am also half Filipino which most people will never guess.  My dad was from India, my mom from the Philippine's.  I believe they were the first from either of their families to leave home and migrate to the US.  I traveled to India when I was young and still have memories, but now most of my dads family is here as well so I probably won't be headed back.  I was in the Philippine's when I was 3...so needless to say, I don't remember a thing.  My moms family is now scattered throughout the world, so if I ever decide to travel, I will probably have a relative there!

2 - I have four kids!  A 4 1/2 year old boy, a 3 year old girl (They are 16 months apart - I know we are crazy!!) and two of the four legged variety!  Both Cockapoo's - a cocker spaniel and poodle mix...Piper and Cocoa.  Piper actually had surgery today!  She tore a ligament a few weeks ago and has been limping ever since.  We get to go pick her up tomorrow!  Cocoa sure does miss her sister!

3 - I spent my summers in the Brigantine Bay on my wave-runner growing up!  I loved that wave-runner and spent almost every weekend out in the water looking for waves!  The best was a weekend after a hurricane...I really got knocked around that weekend!

4 - My first car was a Jeep Wrangler and I was novice 4 wheeler.  I actually still have the Jeep for the summers, it's pretty rusty these days, but my wife hasn't made me sell it yet!  I remember sinking it in the sand one time in Brigantine and it was impossible to get out.  I had to call a tow truck, and yep...the tow truck got stuck too!  That was a long afternoon!

5 - I'm addicted to the TV shows 24 and Lost!  Between work and family, there isn't much down time these days, but I make sure Monday nights at 9 and Wednesday nights at 10 I'm vegetating in front of the TV!!  If you haven't checked it out...come visit the 24 Blog Group

So that's it for now!  I know I need to pick people to tag but I'll need to come back for that!  I need to get the kids ready for bed and I wanted to get this done before I get the tap on the shoulder from Jeff again!

A little about Birchfield - Located in Mount Laurel, NJ

Birchfield Mount LaurelBirchfield is a nice size development in Mount Laurel, NJ with its main entrance off of Church St.  Birchfield has just under 900 units - which are comprised of condominiums, town homes, ranchers and single family homes.  Birchfield Townhomes Mount Laurel

View Map (Satellite Hybrid)

As you can see by the map and the pictures, the development surrounds 3 lakes which makes for a great place to walk, run and have picnics.  Many of the condos, town homes and ranchers are built along the lake which makes for a scenic view from the homes.

There are also two tennis courts, a basketball court, a swimming pool, a playground, an exercise facility and a clubhouse which are open to resident usage.  The excercise facility has two treadmills, a recumbent bike, a weight bench, dumbbells, and a Catalina machine.

Holy Cross High to require Tablet Computers

Holy Cross High School is a private Roman Catholic school located in Delran, NJ.  In fact, it's the only Roman Catholic school in Burlington County.  Starting this September, Holy Cross is taking a big leap into the 21th Century by requiring Tablet Computers for all it's incoming freshman.  The computers will be integrated into the school curriculum and will be used to for assignments, class presentations and for interaction between students and teachers.  The school will even support a wireless internet connection through most of the school.

This sounds like a great idea to help set Holy Cross apart from other schools.  Holy Cross has suffered from decreased enrollment over the past few years and has seen some financial troubles well.  Through all this, the school has continued to take steps to move forward with quality education.

The one downside to this of course, it that nothing is free!  The computers will be leased to the tune of $450/year for four years.  For many, this will be a small price to pay for the added benefits of using the computers as part of the school curriculum.  However, for the families that are already stretched to make the tuition payments, an extra $450 may be difficult for some.  All in all, I think this is a great idea and I hope it works out well for the school!

Rt. 130 Cinnaminson NJ Redevelopment

For Cinnaminson residents, present and future, the welcome redevelopment of the old Cinnaminson Mall is underway!

For those not aware, there is a ~$21 million plan in the works to redevelop the Cinnaminson Mall and to reconfigure the five-point intersection between Church Road, Branch Pike, Cinnaminson Ave. and Rt. 130. A 335,000-square foot shopping center is going to be built on the old site and the highway around it improved which is currently ranked in the top 20 worst intersections in New Jersey.

This great news for area residents as the Cinnaminson Mall has been vacant for years and an eye sore to passing motorists.  For anyone who has tried to navigate that five-point intersection, it's almost as bad as trying to drive through one of New Jersey's famed Circles!  All too often I've seen people going down the wrong way of the poorly marked one way street by the gas station, and people always struggle to merge coming from Branch Pike. Neighboring Delran has just completed similar projects along Rt. 130 as Target recently opened in the revitalized Millside Plaza along with the creation of Hartford Corners.

UPDATE 5/21/07 - The new shopping center will be called The Shoppes at Cinnaminson and is scheduled to open Spring 2008.  Some of the stores currently in the plans include: Shop Rite, Ross, Starbucks, Famous Footwear, Hallmark, Wachovia & Bank of America.

Update 8/25/08 - Shop Rite is still on the list to open here.  Burlington Coat Factory has been added as well.  Starbucks has been replaced by Saxby's Coffee.  Last I heard, they were hoping to get a Sonic also.

What's the future of the Moorestown Library?

moorestown libraryWell...right now no one knows!  The future of the Public Library in Moorestown, NJ (previously voted #1 place to live by Money Magazine) is in limbo.

A brief history is as follows:  The library closed last October 2006 to prepare for a major renovation.  A $3.7 million project was in the works to reconstruct the library and double it's size. Unfortunately, those plans were halted by town council. Due to actions taken by the General Contractor, the township was forced to rescind the contract.  So after being closed for almost 4 months, the township reopened the library on January 29th and hired a consulting firm, Library Development Solutions, to help plan what the future should be.

Now many outsiders may not think this is a big deal, but for Moorestown residents...this is a big deal!  The library is just one of the many things that makes Moorestown such a wonderful place to live.  Growing up, I spent countless hours in that library cramming for tests and getting homework done.  It was a great place to go to get away from distractions, and as a kid, it was only a bike ride away.  Located right in the center of town, it is easily accessible from almost anywhere in town.

So, what is the future of the library?  Well, the town wants to hear your thoughts!  They will be hosting a public meeting on Tuesday, March 20th 2007 from 7 - 8:30pm at the library.  All are welcome to attend and are encouraged to attend.  You can view the notice on the library website.  If you care about the library, come make your voice heard!
