Homeowner Tips for February

For you homeowners out there, here are more tips to help maintain your home. Doing a few simple things a month can save you time and effort down the road.
  • Clean Clothes Dryer Vent - One of the leading causes of house fires is caused by the dryer. Over time, lint and debris builds up in the vent which can cause fire. Spend a few minutes, disconnect the hoses and clean them out.
  • Check Fire Extinguishers - All homes should have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen area. Over time, extinguishers can lose their charge, so take a quick peek at the gauge and make sure it's still charged.
  • Shut-off Valves - Make sure you know the location of your gas shut-off valves. For most people with basements, it's easy to locate. In case of an emergency, you want to know where these are ahead of time instead of looking while you are in a panic.
  • Check/Replace Furnance Filters - Replacing the furnance filters regularly will improve the air quality in your home and will help ensure your furnance is getting the air it needs to operate.
  • Test Smoke Detectors - A simple thing like a bad battery in your smoke detector can make all the difference in the event of a fire. Check them all and replace the batteries if needed.
